UC, Marshall teams are finalists in contest

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Two teams from the University of Charleston and one team from Marshall University are among the 10 finalists in the Fourth Annual Statewide Collegiate Business Plan Competition. 

Two $10,000 prizes are at stake in the final round of competition, which will be Friday and Saturday at the Mountainlair at WVU. The winning teams also will receive professional services to help build their small businesses. Those services include office space from the WVU business incubator, legal services from Spilman Thomas & Battle and accounting services from Dixon Hughes. Read the full article here.

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — The idea came to Adam Craft while riding an escalator in Shanghai. The escalator handrail was dirty, coated with germs. 

Craft, part of a group of University of Charleston graduate business school students who studied in China last summer, developed a device that cleans escalator handrails with ultraviolet light. 

To spread the word about his germ-zapping device and new business, Sanitouch Systems, he turned to social media – Twitter, LinkedIn, blogs. He learned how to use those Internet marketing tools in a new course that’s part of UC’s Masters of Business Administration and Leadership Program. Read the full article here.

Fourth Annual Statewide Competition Gives Student Entrepreneurs a Leg Up

MORGANTOWN – College students proposing a mobile photo booth and an innovative system for maintaining escalator handrails are among the 10 teams advancing to the finals in the fourth annual West Virginia Statewide Collegiate Business Plan Competition.

Six teams from West Virginia University, two from the University of Charleston and one each from Glenville State College and Marshall University will compete in the final round in April.

“Each year the pool becomes much stronger,” said WVU Entrepreneurship Center Director Mindy Walls Dec. 11 on releasing the names of the finalists. Read the full article here.
