MBAL STUDENTS

Kaitlyn Arick is a scholarship athlete studying in an MBA program while meeting the demands of college athletics and completing work on a B.A. in Sports Administration and Business Administration.   Meanwhile she is also interning at The Equities House and working closely with CEO Henry Harmon and The Greater Kanawha Valley Foundation on strategic plans for community development and rebranding of the City of Charleston.  She also works for the University of Charleston as a Peer Educator, helping first year students learn more about the University’s mission to promote community involvement.

Though the MBA program and other jobs, Kaitlyn has first-hand experience with international business and small business management.  The MBA program led her to study in Shanghai, China and to work there with HMG Logistics, an import and export management company.  She has also worked with FS Sports LLC on a project to connect athletes from India to Charleston.  She is also a member of the NearlyWeds, an online wedding planning, booking, and consulting service, which advanced to the final round of the 2010 West Virginia Statewide Business Plan Competition.

As a student-athlete, she has been chosen to be co-captain of the University’s Women’s Basketball team.  Working with young people in educational settings, teammates on the court and business people in the workplace, Kaitlyn has developed skills as a well-rounded professional with more experience than most college seniors.  She has earned the respect and trust of colleagues, teammates, educators, businesspeople and community leaders.

Kaitlyn is seeking to apply experience in international business, a thorough understanding of athletics and sporting events and well-developed interpersonal skills toward a career in one of two paths.  One path would be in marketing through her interest in branding and personal branding, development strategies, social media, sports marketing, sponsorship, and promotional campaigns.  Her research and real world experience would be valuable assets for companies looking to develop and market branding strategies.  The second path would be event coordination as part of a management team in a sports arena.  This option would tap into her experience with and passion for dealing with all aspects of running events:  development, organization, implementation, and management. She can be reached via email at kaitlynarick@ucwv.edu or on twitter @kaitlynarick.

Jenny Grant I am currently in my second and final year of this MBAL program. In 2008 I received my BBA from Ohio University where I studied Accounting and MIS. I am currently interning at BB&T as well as working part time at Dixon Hughes PLLC. Over the years I’ve been fortunate enough to have internships with a few other companies in the Charleston area as well as some international ones. While studying in France I worked on a project for Euralis, an agro-alimentary company, and while studying in China I interned with Franco Vago, a logistics company. I have the privilege of sitting on the YWCA of Charleston’s Board and Finance Committee. In addition to these activities I am part of a team of women who are competing in the final round of the 2010 West Virginia Statewide Collegiate Business Plan Competition.

Because of my accounting background it comes as no surprise that people associate me with my quantitative skill set. The skills that I am most proud of though are my organization and time management skills. I like to stay busy partly because I feel I’m more productive with a lot on my plate. In order to be productive things must be prioritized and for me, put on a to-do list of some sort; therefore I feel these two skills go hand in hand.

I have two ideal career paths in mind as graduation approaches. My first option would be in the accounting/finance industry. I’ve known for a long time that I enjoy working with numbers. Since I have spent some time in this industry I already know that I like the work. My other option is social media marketing. This is an industry that continues to intrigue me. I would love to be the one to develop and implement these kinds of marketing strategies for businesses. You can reach me via email at JenniferSpangler@ucwv.edu or on Twitter @JennySGrant

Reid McEwen was born in Phoenix, Arizona, but grew up in Bowling Green, Ohio, a place he called home for fifteen years.  He went back to Arizona for college where he attended Arizona State University on an academic scholarship for three years, majoring in Economics at the W.P. Carey School of Business in Tempe, AZ.  His love for athletics and desire to play college tennis influenced his decision to drop out of ASU with the original intent of taking one semester off from school to explore the different opportunities to play tennis at a University that would hopefully be a good fit for an economics major.  Less than two weeks before the start of the 2009 Fall semester, the UC Men’s Tennis coach convinced Reid to visit and he committed to attend UC on a tennis scholarship the weekend before classes started.  After one day of taking undergraduate classes and a very unusual series of conversations and events, Reid found himself attending the UC Graduate School of Business pursuing an MBAL degree and having some of the greatest experiences one could ever ask for.

Reid considers himself indescribably fortunate to be on a tennis team with a group of fantastic individuals, getting is master’s degree and experiencing such incredible opportunities as spending the summer in China, all while realizing he could be in a very different situation with an economics degree in a struggling economy.  He aspires to be a sustainability consultant of sorts, helping businesses to integrate sustainable development into their business plans.  Currently he is writing his Master’s thesis on sustainability and he is working on several sustainability projects while interning at ZMM, Inc., an architecture firm with a focus on sustainable design.  He is also a partner at MJM Consulting, a strategic business development firm started with two other MBAL students he met in the MBAL program.  Reid understands that many of the opportunities provided to him through the business school are rare and he is ecstatic to be a part this inaugural class.

Michael Waggoner I grew up in Greenville, North Carolina, where I played many sports and enjoyed being around friends and family. I am currently living in Charleston, West Virginia, attending the MBAL Program at the University Of Charleston Graduate School Of Business. I am not a common college student; I will be receiving both my Bachelor’s Degree and my Master’s Degree in four years through this MBAL Program. I am scheduled to graduate in May 2011. I am also on the golf team at the University of Charleston.

I got my first experience with business at the age of fifteen. I started working for a company called Mendenhall Apparel, which focuses on special merchandising for all sorts of companies nationwide. While working for this company, I gained sales experience, communication skills, marketing skills, and management skills. I also gained knowledge about business through my father, who is a Marketing Director for Toshiba. Through the experience at Mendenhall Apparel and through the knowledge gained from my father, helped influence me to pursue business as a focus in college and as career.

Also, I am currently undergoing a Professional Practice with CAMC General, Memorial, and Women’s and Children’s hospitals where I am a part of a consulting team trying to improve starting times and turnover times in the operating rooms in all three hospitals. I look forward to being a part of this team and look forward to making a change for the better at all three hospitals.

Although I do not have a specific career path in business, I am open to any business opportunities that become available. I am leaning more towards something along the lines of marketing and sales, but with further education and learning opportunities, my mind is like an open canvas, ready for anything that comes my way.

Jonathan Smith: I was born and raised in Knoxville, TN.  In the fall of 2008 I graduated from the University of Tennessee with a B.S. in Marketing and a collateral in International Business.  I am an alumnus of the Beta Sigma chapter of the Sigma Chi fraternity.  During the summer of 2007 I studied international statistical marketing at Middlesex University in London, UK.  I am currently a first year student at the University of Charleston MBAL program.

Fly fishing has always been one of my great passions.  I have fly fished for over 15 years in different rivers throughout Europe and U.S.  During my undergraduate career I worked as a fly fishing guide for Blackberry Farm in Walland, TN.  During this time I was sponsored by Simms Fishing Products and the Orvis Company.  During the summer of 2008 I worked as an intern with Saltwater Experience, a fly fishing company with shows on ESPN.

As a first year MBAL student I am still trying to figure out my career direction.  I have had a strong back ground in quantities studies.  A majority of my undergraduate work was in the field of statistics.  I would feel extremely comfortable with a career that requires quantitative reasoning skills.  But, I have always had an entrepreneurial spirit.  While I was a professional fly fishing guide in college I never thought of it as a future career.  However, as time has gone along I have thought about opening my own fly fishing company.   So as you can see, with my different expertise I am stilling trying to find my future career in business.  Even though there is great uncertainty in my future career plans I feel strongly that personal branding will help either independently.

In my spare time I enjoy fly fishing, mountaineering, rock climbing, reading, and working out.  I can be contacted at jonathansmith@ucwv.edu.

Brynn Crotty is a native of Charleston, West Virginia and a graduate student currently enrolled in her first year of the two-year MBAL program at the University of Charleston’s Graduate School of Business.  Brynn also holds a Bachelor’s degree in English Literature from Denison University, located in Granville, Ohio.  Currently, Brynn is on a team that is in the process of designing a strategic business plan for the University of Charleston’s School of Pharmacy for the professional practice aspect of the MBAL program.  She is also an active member of Generation Charleston, and serves as a liaison between the Economic Development Committee and the Communications Committee.

Following her graduation from Denison University in May of 2009, Brynn transferred the analytical and critical thinking skills she acquired through her undergraduate major in English Literature to the University of Charleston’s MBAL program.  In addition to analytical skills, Brynn holds a strong set of communication skills, including, but not limited to writing, public speaking, and relational or social skills.  These skills are exemplified through the activities and organizations with which she participated as an undergraduate student, as well as those in which she continues to participate.  While at Denison, Brynn held the position of staff writer for the student-run newspaper, The Denisonian.  Not only did she write for the newspaper, but also she frequently edited her peers’ papers, serving as both a writing and editing resource for the student body.  Furthermore, Brynn was a member of Denison’s Moot Court Team, which debated constitutional issues with surrounding colleges.  She also held the position of Keeper of Records for the team, obtaining and holding all documents for the team, as well as creating a newsletter.  Finally, Brynn portrays leadership skills and qualities.  For the last four years, she participated in the Salvation Army’s program, Power for Life, an after-school mentoring and tutoring program for underprivileged middle-school girls in the Newark, Ohio area.  However, even though she is now away from Denison, Brynn continues to hone and fine-tune these skill sets, as she believes learning is an ongoing and never-ending process.

A naturally creative individual, Brynn is interested in pursing those creative ventures in the future, through either marketing or in the development of an interior design business.

Don Weller is originally a Rochester, New York native. He came to the Charleston, West Virginia area in the fall of 2006 to pursue a higher education at the University of Charleston undergraduate level and at the same time play on a golf scholarship for the  UC Men’s golf team.  The first three and a half years his education revolved mostly around the natural sciences, as his undergraduate degree is in Biology. The beginning of the 2010 spring semester he enrolled and was admitted into the MBAL program.  He is currently working toward a Masters in Business Administrations and Leadership (Graduating spring 2011).

The summer of 2009, Don interned at the Robert C. Byrd Science Center, Marshall University, working in the department of pharmacology/toxicology researching the effects of nicotine on human retinal cells. Upon completion of this project, he gained a better understanding that biomedical research was not a future career interest. For this reason he transited away from science and more toward business. It is his belief finding the perfect career is nothing more than a series of trials and errors within many different fields. This is exactly the mentality of UC’s MBAL program. Throughout the four semesters of study, students are placed in a variety of different professional settings for an average of three months and are expected to complete various outcomes.   Currently Don is gaining professional practice experience in the Charleston, WV area hospitals, working hand-in-hand with health care operation consultants and the hospitals six sigma team.

In Don’s spare time he enjoys playing golf, beautiful weather , fishing, meeting new people and playing an active role within society.

Don can be reached at DonaldWeller@ucwv.edu or on twitter @Donaldweller

Chris Price- I am a first year MBAL student at the University of Charleston. In spring 2009 I graduated from UC with a BS in Public Policy, with a focus in the Leadership Track. Currently, I am working at the West Virginia Attorney General’s Office. My job description at the AG’s Office is broadly defined, but very appropriate for my strong social skills. Among my many duties at the office, my favorite is to accompany the Attorney General on certain public appearances, and attend events in the name of the Attorney General’s Office.

In addition to my employment with the AG’s Office, I am conducting a professional practice at an elderly home healthcare facility, Mama’s Place LLC; a facility founded by my mother in late 2008. Even though my mom is my boss, the professional practice is no cakewalk. During this semester, my time with the company is spent reformulating expense and revenue recording systems and overhauling some of the organizational practices causing the business to hemorrhage funds. I also plan on conducting extensive research into nonprofit organizations as well as grant possibilities. Just from my preliminary delving, I have discovered some potential avenues the business could take, and I must say the prospects are very promising. The experience has been very enlightening, and I have enjoyed working on this professional practice immensely.

I am still unsure what I explicitly want for a future career, but I do know that I love the political process. With my current status as an MBAL student, I think I would enjoy a career involved with business and politics. An occupation that appeals to both of these interests is government relations. I personally feel this career is a good fit for me because it is very dependent on one’s ability to network and persuade.

This internship gives the opportunity to improve skill and perceive the real financial business doing in bank. The internship includes loaning, risk analysis and account.

As being the assistance of financial manager, qiting has known the process to make loan and follow up with client afterward. The accomplishment is to improve my skill and knowledge on accounting and finance.Qiting has also planned the future career after graduation; she plans to go back to China and dig into financial related; such as bank or financial company; she is eager to see what her future will hold.

Adam Bryant Craft is more than just a name, it is a brand. Ever since being born in 1987, Adam has done things that most people wouldn’t do in a lifetime. He has endured 17 years of education, 15 years of athletic sports, and is now prepared for a lifetime of achievement within an organization.

The University of Charleston became Craft’s home since graduating high school in 2005. There, he acquired many skills such as: time management, quantitative analysis, team leadership and most of all, patience. Playing and coaching under head coach Tony DeMeo, Adam learned multiple life lessons along the way as well. The lessons turned into quick, but insightful sayings; “if you’re not early, your late”, “practice prevents poor performance”, and “always, always look another man/woman in the eyes”.

The ABC brand grew significantly after joining The Graduate School of Business at the University of Charleston. After suffering a severe leg injury due to football, Craft began focusing on his future; only not as a professional athlete, but rather as a professional businessman. While engaged in the masters program, Adam gained valuable experience at various companies and networked with highly powerful community leaders.

Shanghai, China became the highlight of 2009 when Adam spent a summer studying Chinese language/ business and interning at multinational logistics company, Uniworld. Adam returned with an idea and decided to dedicate his time to developing a way to sanitize escalator handrails. Now CEO of SANI-TOUCH, Craft continues to make a name for himself. He states, “I don’t control my brand or my name, the people do! I do the “right” thing because it is the right thing to do; and in turn people respect me and boost my brand”

After interning at MATRIC, Uniworld Logistics, and Clark International Logistics, Adam has gained over 500 hours of professional practice experience. Conducting market research for FestivAll, writing a 40 page Thesis, and competing in the West Virginia Business Competition has prepared Mr. Craft for a lifetime of excellence.
